My Baby Journey - Baby Carrying

Tuesday, 21 March 2017 10:40:44 Europe/London

Baby carrying has evolved massively of late having been a practice which has transcended the centuries especially in parts of the world where women have large families or go straight back to work after child birth.  It is us mimicking nature and animals that have evolved to transport their babies from birth into childhood whilst remaining close to them.

For me, I don't think I would have coped without my baby carriers for any of my childen.  Especially this time round with an active 3 and 5 year old and my own business to contend with.  Molly is never happier than when she's snuggled up close to me being carried.

She's happy to hear my heartbeat up close once again, feel my warmth and remember what it's like to walk around with me.  She's soothed so much by this feeling of closeness that without it I would have been lost.

It's certainly easier dealing with two others on scooters and bikes when I have my hands free and Molly safely stowed in a carrier.  It's quick and easy to put on, no struggling to put up a pram in a rush!

Here's me with Molly at the park on a crisp winter's day. I'm wearing my Boba Hoodie to keep us both warm - this is a great new addition to my wardrobe. Its really stretchy so goes over any carrier, it fits underneath my coat on very cold days and looks stylish on its own.

Mountain Buggy Juno Carrier

Molly has had a lot of reflux and wind since birth and to be able to carry her upright to expel gas and wind has been invaluable.  Carriers are also proven to reduce possetting (spitting out milk that comes back up).  If you've got a relux-y baby invest in a good carrier now!

So, the two carriers that I've been using are these ones.  I can't fault them.  Both are suitable for indoors and outdoors but for me I tend to use my Boba Wrap around the indoors and for shorter walks outdoors and the Mountain Buggy Juno Carrier for our longer outdoor adventures.  Here's a short version of what I love about them both.

Boba Wrap

Boba Wrap

The Boba Wrap is a wrap-style carrier which is really simple and buckle free.  Essentially it's one piece of fabric which is easily fashioned into the wrap.  The fabric simply distributes the weight of the child evenly across the fabric.  It's a one size fits all piece of kit that is suitable from newborn up to 35lb.  The child is always carried at the front.  It's suitable for use indoors and out and is perfect for Summer time and warmer climates outdoors.  It is fully machine washable and washes really well in my experience.  I can't stress enough that this carrier is the ultimate ergonomically designed simplest carrier I know.  And there is a massive advantage to that simplicity!  For those of you like me looking for something with organic credentials it also comes in a bamboo version.

This is my carrier of choice for the great outdoors or for when chasing other children around!  Again, it's got great longevity as it's suitable from newborn through to toddler stage.  This carrier has 4 carrying modes and a host of other great features that really do set this carrier apart from the rest.  All four modes are ergonomically tested and really do pass with flying colours.  So, baby can front face both inwards (when newborn) and outwards (once bigger and neck better developed), baby can be carried on the hip with this carrier and also as they get bigger baby can be worn on the back rather than the front.  All in all this carrier is a great investment especially when bought for baby number one.  The junior insert that comes with the carrier means that this carrier is the perfect fit from Day One.  There are storage pockets for essential items when out and about and also a hood to pull over if you're out in adverse weather (that folds away neatly in a storage pocket). The other thing I love about this carrier are the pockets for your hands which allow you to a. keep your hands warm but b. also to feel that close connection with baby whenever required.  It's the gold standard of carriers that grows with your child.  It also comes with the most comprehensive guide to how to carry your baby safely and securely at all times in the different positions - really handy if you're unsure like I was as a first-time Mum.

So, whatever stage your baby is at have a really good think about which baby carrier would suit you (and baby's Dad or carers) best.  Plenty of Dad's love the feeling of carrying baby around and baby loves it too!  All of these carriers are easily adjustable to fit different wearers.  They are truly one baby essential item that have been around FOREVER and for good reason!

My Baby Journey - Squeaky Clean

Monday, 6 March 2017 14:31:23 Europe/London

Two of my essential products that I prefer to use around my kids are my Faith In Nature Deodorant which is light enough to not interfere with baby feeding and my gentle Bentley & Me Hand SanitiserThe Faith in Nature Deodorant is a lovely roll-on, paraben-free product; great for me and baby.  I also never go anywhere without my super gentle Bentley & Me Hand Sanitiser.  Delicate skin is more susceptible to the negative effects caused by synthetic, harsh chemicals found in many other hand sanitiser brands.  I love the fact that this formula is free from harmful chemicals and is made with a unique blend of the finest natural ingredients, 90% of which are organic and totally biodegradable.  Get into good habits early on and adopt these two easy ways of protecting you and your baby from the harmful effects of exposure to harsh chemicals.

My Baby Journey - Nursing Cover

Wednesday, 22 February 2017 09:24:29 Europe/London

Feeding whilst out and about can be daunting especially as you’re establishing feeding or out surrounded by a lot of strangers.  I love the Bebe au Lait 100% pure muslin nursing covers.   I’ve used one with all of my children.  It gives just the right amount of coverage so you feel secure and it’s perfectly designed so that you can see baby underneath without everyone else seeing what’s going on.  They are the most lightweight covers around and allow you to have eye contact with baby at all times.  They fold up really small and are so lightweight that they're barely there in your change bag.  They make a great present for anyone that’s hoping to breastfeed their newborn.

My Baby Journey - Recovering from Birth

Wednesday, 8 February 2017 13:17:49 Europe/London

I am the daughter of health shop owners and their vision for natural remedies has always been one I've shared. Arnica has been known to help the healing process for centuries.  One small tablet sucked, chewed or dissolved in warm water really helps to reduce swelling and bruising faster to help aid recovery. I have chosen Nelson's Arnica as I believe it offers the best quality ingredients.

The Natural Birthing Company is a company that was founded by a Midwife to create totally natural products to aid in birth recovery and breastfeeding.  Pure Bliss is a blend of essential oils that can be used diluted in water as a cold compress or dropped into a cold or warm sitz bath or to douche the area.  Its traditional blend of herbal Hypericum and Calendula are proven to kick-start healing and soothe.  This magic potion will ease perineal discomfort beit from general soreness, tears or uncomfortable stitches, haemorrhoids or even caesarean scars.

Make sure you have yours ready for those first few days and weeks with your new baby!

My Baby Journey - Recovery Baths

Wednesday, 11 January 2017 13:24:48 Europe/London

I'm trying to save a little bit of time for me in this mad house of two kids and a new baby!  My favourite thing for some me-time is a lovely warm  bath.  Wonderfully relaxing and actually, especially in those first six weeks after birth, can help to heal your body at the same time.

I love these Magik dead-sea bath salts which I drop into the bath.  They soothe my skin as well as speeding up the healing process.

I have always loved essential oils and two of my favourites are top of the list once baby arrives; Tea tree oil and Lavender essential oil.  Not only do they unwind the mind but their age-old antiseptic and healing properties mean that you're doing your body good.

My Baby Journey - Pads

Wednesday, 11 January 2017 13:00:01 Europe/London

Maternity Pads!?!  When you're pregnant, of course, you completely forget about wearing pads as your monthlies stop!  (And of course, there's nothing to miss!) I can't recommend enough, getting actual maternity pads, rather than using other feminine hygiene products for after baby arrives as they are designed for the purpose and offer a lot more comfort especially in the first weeks.  It's really important especially in the first weeks as your body heals and your body gets rid of all things unwanted that you have a product you can trust.

I wanted to use pads that were organic and as I have a sensitive skin something that was chlorine and perfume free.  I also hate that so many pads these days are not biodgegradable (and these are),  so these are the ones I chose for the Mama Natural site - Natracare Maternity Pads.  Get them ordered with your other essential baby kit for when they're needed.  Believe me, Dads can't be trusted to find and buy the right products after the event!

My Baby Journey - A Good Nights Sleep

Wednesday, 11 January 2017 12:49:09 Europe/London

One of my best tips for New mamas is to really think about getting sleeping sorted for BOTH of you before baby arrives!

Experts advise that the safest place for your baby to sleep for the first six months is in a cot in the same room as you. Six months is quite a long time, so creating the right sleeping environment for both of you is key to relaxed and fuss-free night time feeding and changing and therefore ultimately, sleeping!

This time round, for the first time I've got my dream bedside crib – SnuzPod 2 from Snuz. They weren’t around when James and Elsie were babies, and I’ve always wished I could have had one for them as neither of them settled easily in their moses baskets.

I love that Molly is right beside me in bed so I can see her and reach over to settle her at all times, whilst knowing that she is safe in her own sleeping space! Molly is already settled in her SnuzPod and I’m sure it’s because she’s comforted by being close to me.

When she does stir or wake and is ready to be fed I can easily gather her up without even getting up fully and start to feed.  Once she's done it's really easy to gently place her back in the crib to re-settle.  It is definitely doing wonders for my back too, which did suffer with all the reaching over and lifting I did with my first two babies. I can imagine that the SnuzPod is indispensable for Mama’s who are recovering from a Caesarean Section.

  • The SnuzPod 2 comes with a mattress with materials certified to Oeko-Tex 100 which guarantees the product against any harmful chemicals or substances, however I wanted to upgrade to the Snuz Natural Crib Mattress made from luxury natural materials.

  • Every SnuzPod 2 comes in its own distinctive colour.  With so many choices you can choose the one that matches your decor.  I chose the Dove Grey as it goes with my own colour-scheme.  I also couldn’t resist one of the beautiful Snuz Designz Crib Bedding sets. The one in the picture is Cloud 9, which is a lovely neutral design and it feels so amazingly soft.

The Snuz waterproof Mattress protector is also a must to keep both baby and mattress clean and dry.

The SnuzPod has to be one of my best buys and ‘must have’ products! I love bedtime and the special time Molly and I share during our night time feeds.

My Baby Journey - Pleased to Meet You

Monday, 9 January 2017 11:13:41 Europe/London

Pleased to meet you! Molly arrived (finally, over a week late!) on 4th January in the early hours of the morning weighing an impressive 8lb. It was a really swift labour and delivery. I got into the birth pool and some 20 minutes later she arrived. I knew it might be a short labour as it was my third child so it was key to me to be prepared! I was able to be in the pool just in time to push so it worked out really well. Here's a pic of us both shortly after birth (you can see the pool in the background). Such a lot of hair! Emmy x

Here's a little bit more of my story...  After having false labour pains during the night on several occasions I wondered whether this time it was the real thing. At 12.30am I thought I should wake up my husband and start setting up the pool. We were in no particular hurry as the contractions were 10 minutes apart and manageable. I called the home birth team to let them know that I was in labour, but told them I’d call back when I thought I needed them to come out to us...Just five minutes later the contractions picked up and I called them back to ask them to get ready to come to us.

My husband was very pleased with himself as he had everything under control with the pool; it inflated very quickly and he set the water temperature from the tap to 37 degrees, so all it had to do was fill up. He put some music on to create some atmosphere and he seemed to just relax and get excited for the events ahead… Meanwhile I was in the zone trying to manage the contractions which went from every 10 minutes to every 3 minutes and then started to come thick and fast. The midwives arrived just before 2am and the pool was just about full. They were lovely. We did the introductions between contractions and they sat quietly and chatted between themselves for a short while.

I remember having a few strong contractions once the midwives had arrived, then I felt ready to get into the pool. The water was such a huge pain relief for me and straight away I felt the urge to push, I couldn’t quite believe it was all happening so quickly. After a few pushes I could feel her crowning and with calm instructions from the midwives just breathed out her head. One more contraction and she was born into the water. It was such an amazing feeling to catch her and cuddle her for the first time. We didn’t know her sex before she was born and it didn’t occur to us to look for the first few minutes, it was just wonderful that she had arrived and to hear her cry. The midwives asked whether she was a girl or a boy and I had a quick look to discover we had another little girl who we’d decided to name Molly after my Grandma.

Our two older children James, 5, and Elsie, 3, were fast asleep in bed during it all, but James walked into the living room 10 minutes after she was born, looking very bewildered to see two strange ladies, a big pool and his new baby sister during the middle of the night. Hopefully he’ll never forget the moment he met his little sister.

A few hours later, around 5.30am to be precise both children came back downstairs to meet their new sister.  Before packing the pool away big brother and sister enjoyed exploring it... Our family is complete!

James & Elsie

If you’re interested in the products I used for my home water birth then please read on… I opted for the Birth Pool in a Box Eco Regular Plus including Liner, the electric inflate / deflate pump and the standard filling kit. These items have given me peace of mind that I can be ready to go in as short a space of time as possible with the least fuss. The Birth Pool in a Box pool comes with a liner included. Each liner is hygienically manufactured and acts as a barrier between the pool and baby to prevent contamination. It also makes cleaning the pool away as easy as it can possibly be - simply drain the water and fold up the liner and dispose. I also bought the clearfit cover for the standard pool to keep the water as warm as possible whilst it filled and also used it after the birth until we were ready to drain and pack the pool away. The cover is also useful to keep the water as warm as possible if you step out of the pool at all for any reason. The birth mirror allowed the midwife to keep an eye on progress. Emptying the pool was very easy and clean with the submersible water pump and the hose. The water went straight into the garden and the liner went into the bin. The pool was deflated as quickly as it was inflated with the inflate deflate pump .
